BONSAI FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

  • What is a Bonsai Tree?
"Bon": A thin dish or bowl. "Sai": A tree or other plant which is planted in a container. The art of a Bonsai form is an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, which was then partially redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism. Bonsai's are meant to bring that Zen and Feng Shui into a room.
  • Are these low maintenance plants?
Ideally, yes. The Juniper and Chinese Banyan Bonsai trees are generally low maintenance plants by having simple signals of what they need. Knowing when to water them and giving enough sunlight. If your bonsai has dry soil, it needs more water. If your bonsai leaves are drying out, it needs more water. If the leaves/foliage is wilted or turning brown, that may mean that they need more sunlight.
  • What to do if my Juniper Bonsai foliage starts turning brown?
There are a couple indicators that tells you what the "browning" means... 1. If your bonsai is starting to turn brown, don't be alarmed. This could mean two things, if you've pruned recently, you may have pruned it the wrong way. Two; it may need more sunlight. If your Juniper Bonsai has some brown and mostly green, it needs more sunlight. If it's brown all over chances are it is dead, but to make sure, scratch the bark a little to see the color. If the color is green on the inside, it can still be saved! If it is yellow or brown, it's dead and there's nothing you can do to save it.
  • How often do I repot my bonsai?
Once you've received your bonsai, you would only need to repot once every 2 to 3 years. If you would like to repot for a different pot you can do so, just make sure that you choose one of the same size. These are "miniature trees" so they grow very slowly but may quickly grow new leaves/ foliage!
  • Is the Bonsai dead if all the leaves fall off?
No. you may see the leaves turning yellow and falling. This completely normal and nothing to worry about. During fall and winter, it is important to remember that the Bonsai will not be growing as fast as they would during summer, so it may take a while before you the new growth coming through.
  • What to do when Bonsai leaves fall off?
Water the Bonsai moderately in the next few weeks. If the tree is still alive, it will often recover again. (this happens mostly with ficus bonsai trees)
  • Do Bonsai leaves fall off in autumn?
Deciduous Bonsai trees, much like their full-sized counterparts, shed leaves as a part of their natural growth cycle. During the fall, it's entirely normal for these Bonsai trees to loose their leaves in preparation for winter.
